Yesterday I was searching for a cheap student desk and a came across a decent sale at Wal-Mart for an office desk. The Wal-Mart Canopy Desk is spacious to say the least. Although you’ll pay for the space, you’ve got to appreciate the ability to spread your books all over the desk and not be cramped in your work space. The Canopy also has a big center drawer that can also be a keyboard tray. There’s an additional drawer for any extra storage you might need (CPU storage is suggested here). You also have the now standard space for cords in the back to prevent clutter and stay organized.
Now one problem you might have with this desk is putting it together. The assembly is somewhat lengthy (but not really difficult) and the actual desk itself weighs a lot given the thick drawers. However, the fact that this desk is heavy can be looked at as a good thing since it’s not made of particle board. Canopy states that all of its furniture is made of solid hardwood with birch veneer. The knobs are made of both wood and brushed-nickel.
Another positive aspect is the desk is covered with a coat seal that protects against moisture (like when you don’t use a coaster under a glass of water) and light everyday scratching. Below is a picture of the desk for students.

As you can see the price was marked down from $329 to $289 for a $40 savings. Wal-Mart’s website has the Chestnut finish for $349 but it is only available online. The price for a mahogany desk is amazingly $389 so it looks like the in-store price may be significantly cheaper. Wal-Mart’s website does say in store prices can differ so $100 off would be like a clearance price. This is actually a Sauder Student Desk if you’re wondering the company behind the manufacturing.

One problem that has troubled some customers is the color of the mahogany varies. Sometimes it’s a chocolate brown color like my photo, but others the color is closer to a black so be weary. If you’re buying a student desk hutch or a dresser drawer to go with it, proceed with caution. You may want to go to the store to actually make the purchase.
Although it’s not one of those student computer desks per se, you’re going to have plenty of room to put a desk computer or laptop if you want.
