Better Homes Student Desk at Wal-Mart
While searching for the right student desk, I went to Target and Wal-Mart. Walmart had more writing desks per se, but Target had some cool options as well as complements and accents for the perfect student room. With my mission to find a stylish and affordable desk in mind, I came across some cool options.
The first desk I want to go over is the Better Homes and Gardens Baily Lane Writing Desk which comes with several features. It has a drawer with brass-plated pulls and a flip-down, extension keyboard tray. You’ll also find a built-in cable organizer to keep cords from getting tangled and your workplace tidy. One feature I really liked was it requires no tools and is supposedly easy to assemble.

It’s dimensions measure 47 x 23.5 x 34”H and it comes with a laminate finish over engineered wood. I took a picture of the desk on shelf so you can get an idea of it’s physical presence.
It definitely looks out of place amongst the new-age dorm themed furnishings but I think it would look great in an apartment, house, or home furnished with dark, rich wood or light carpeting. You won’t be able to spread your books all over the surface of this one, but you do have little compartments and cabinets to put money, pencils, pens, staples, and other miscellaneous materials that occasionally get in the way. I will say that your laptop and a book will comfortably fit on top.
One very interesting aspect of this Baily Lane student or writing desk is the price in store at Wal-Mart was $199 but the price online was only $169. I’m guessing stocking and shipping fees/costs play a big part in this. Here is a picture of the price tag from the shelves.

Although I did like the desk, compared to other prices I think I can do better both in terms of cost and a more modern style. This desk is functionable but is more bulky than what I was hoping to buy and also won’t match with such items as mesh metal garbage cans and pencil holders. That said, I do love the nostalgic feel of the Better Homes and Gardens and it always helps when you can recognize the name brand on a product. In case you want to know, the model number on this is 408389.
